Wolfgang “Otto” Kleff
Wolfgang Kleff was a great keeper who amassed a great collection of domestic and European winners medals during his time at Borussia Munchengladbach, yet failed to make much of an impact in the German national team due, mainly, to the powers of Sepp Maier.
It is almost without doubt that Kleff would have collected many more national caps for the Nationalmanschaafthad it not been for Maier: Kleff’s was a talent worthy of world-wide appreciation.
However, he did get one over on his Bayern Munich counterpart by winning more Bundesliga titles - Kleff collected the winners medal five times in total (as well as a German Cup, and a UEFA Cup) here are the total awards won by Wolfgang Kleff:
- Bundesliga Winner 1970, 1971, 1975, 1976, 1977
- German Cup Winner 1973
- UEFA Cup Winner 1975; Runners Up 1973
- European Cup Runners Up 1977
Wolfgang Kleff’s nickname “Otto”, incidentally, came from him having more than a passing resemblance to the German actor Otto Waalkes!
