Michel Preud’homme was the first ever winner of the Yashin Award for best goalkeeper in a World Cup in the USA 1994 tournament, which was a fitting way for the player, who then had arguably his best years behind him, to be marked, having achieved great things without ever playing league football on the big stage for any club.
Plying his trade in Belgium, for KV Mechelen, a league which was not regarded for its European success, it is a mark of how well Preud’homme played in the 1980s that he clocked a Cup Winners Cup winners medal and a European Super Cup winners medal in 1987/88.
