Name: Josef “Sepp” Maier

Club Appearences: 536 - Bayern Munich 1965-1980

National Appearences: 95 - West Germany - 1966-1979

Biography:

Sepp Maier was one of the greatest keepers during a period which saw many great goalkeepers rise to prominence, particularly in Europe.

He spent his entire playing career at Bayern Munich - which is an achievement in itself - though he achieved great things with Bayen, winning the Bundesliga four times, and the European Cup three times. (more…)

Gordon Banks Vs Pele

This save is widely recognised as one of the best ever made. There are several reasons for this, not least because:

  • it was in a World Cup;
  • a header by arguably the best centre-forward of the era; and
  • Banks managed to put the ball out of play.

Gordon Banks was a fine goalkeeper for England, perhaps one of the greatest ever, particularly given the success he enjoyed at the highest level.
